The MYP’s criterion-referenced assessment is fundamentally different from traditional grading, focusing on skill development over rote memorization. Instead of one final letter or percentage, students are graded across four specific criteria (A-D) per subject, with a final overall subject grade from 1 to 7. A dedicated tutor can help interpret the specific descriptors for each criterion so your child knows exactly what a “7” looks like for communication or inquiry.
The MYP is the essential foundational bridge to the challenging Diploma Programme (DP); think of it as a comprehensive training camp for the DP’s academic rigor. MYP tuition focuses on mastering Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills like research, communication, and self-management, which are non-negotiable for success in DP requirements like the Extended Essay and TOK.
The most effective time to start is typically in MYP Year 3 or Year 4, right before the introduction of more complex concepts and the final eAssessment preparations. Proactive support early on helps students build a solid conceptual understanding rather than just trying to play catch-up right before high-stakes exams.
Absolutely—while grades are a good indicator, they don’t always reveal weaknesses in the core inquiry-based learning process that the MYP values. High-achieving students often benefit from tuition that challenges them with interdisciplinary units and authentic problem-solving, deepening their conceptual understanding beyond the classroom. Our tutors specialize in extending the learning for top-scoring students to ensure they are fully prepared for the demands of the DP.
The MYP eAssessment is an innovative, on-screen examination taken in Year 5 that evaluates a student’s ability to apply knowledge and skills in complex, real-world contexts, going far beyond simple recall. Tutors use official specimen materials and focus on training the student in the specific digital tools and task formats (like drag-and-drop or simulation interaction) to boost confidence and reduce test anxiety. You can find links to official eAssessment practice resources in the Appendix.
Without a doubt, the Personal Project can be the single biggest source of student stress, as it requires high levels of independent self-management and detailed documentation. A dedicated tutor acts as a structured mentor, guiding the student through the official process—from defining a goal and planning to completing the product and writing the final report—without doing the work for them.
