What will you learn?
In our IB MYP Spanish Language Acquisition courses, you will learn to communicate in various modes, in more than one language, which is essential to the concept of an international education. You will also learn to use concepts to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local, and global significance and examine knowledge holistically.
Depending on your prior experience and learning goals, you will be placed in one of the six phases of the MYP language acquisition continuum, ranging from emergent to proficient. Each phase has objectives, criteria, and expectations aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

FAQs
The MYP Spanish course, known as Language Acquisition, assesses students across four comprehensive criteria that cover all language skills. These criteria are A: Comprehending Spoken and Visual Text, B: Comprehending Written and Visual Text, C: Communicating in Response to Spoken, Written, and Visual Text, and D: Using Language in Spoken and Written Form. Understanding the specific rubrics for each is the key to maximizing your final grade.
The MYP uses six flexible phases to place students based on their prior experience, making it much more personalized than traditional grade levels. A new learner might start in Phase 1 (Emergent), while a student with prior exposure could start in Phase 3 or 4 (Capable). The course material and expectations are entirely adapted to your current phases of learning, focusing on moving you to the next level of communicative competence.
Achieving fluency is less about memorizing lists and more about consistent, interactive practice where you must produce language spontaneously. Try to engage in “low-stakes” Spanish conversations with peers, use cultural artifacts like Spanish music and films without subtitles, and always focus on applying new vocabulary and grammar structures immediately. This constant practice is vital for the Criterion C and D speaking assessments.
Global Contexts are the philosophical lenses through which all MYP units are explored, ensuring your Spanish learning is always connected to the real world. Instead of just learning food vocabulary, you might explore it through the “Global Contexts” of Fairness and Development by researching food inequality in Spanish-speaking countries. This contextual learning elevates your work, making it more conceptually rich and sophisticated.
The eAssessment is primarily an externally marked on-screen examination that tests all four language skills in an integrated way. Preparation should focus heavily on timed practice with sample on-screen exams, paying close attention to the Assessment Criteria for tasks like listening comprehension and structured written responses. It’s crucial to practice responding to prompts that require you to interpret visual and aural text simultaneously.
MYP Spanish is specifically designed to transition seamlessly into the IB Diploma Programme’s Spanish B (Language B) course. Students who successfully progress through the MYP Language Acquisition phases often have a strong foundation in conceptual understanding and intercultural awareness, making the jump to DP Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL) a logical and well-supported step.
